For hiking the most obvious (but also the far best) option for you would be Mt. Esja which is located just east of Reykjavík. It is the big mountain that you can see behind the Reykjavík skyline. You can go there by bus (Route 15 from „Hlemmur“ bus station near the apartment, and change to route 57 in „Háholt“ in Mosfellsbær to the foot of the mountain).
