Of 2016 the century old store closed its doors and sat idle for 9 months. The building with the sweeping staircase and tin ceilings was given new life again in the fall when it opened to Maritime Mosaic. It now is the home to 7 business with more to follow. Mansour’s Men’s Wear, that is celebrating its 95th anniversary this year (2019) and has been recognized as the Lebanese Business of the Year for Nova Scotia. The story began when Mike Mansour – came to Canada from Lebanon in 1914 – moved into the store’s present quarters in 1924. He was joined by Theo Mansour, in 1926, while Mike’s son, Norman, joined in 1944. Theo’s son, Robert, would join the business in the 1970s and his son, Mikhial, a grad of Saint Mary’s University joined the company in 2015 and has embraced the use of social media to attract customers to both the online store and the physical building in downtown Amherst. You must stop by and tell them Chris sent you!

The quilt shop is Mrs. Pugsley’s Emporium.
The owner is Beth Munroe.
Beth, who’s Mrs. Pugsley? Well, here’s the story.
I’m a pharmacist and, in 2001, I bought the business known as Pugsley’s Drug Store in Amherst. Along with the business came the beautiful, historic building known as the Clock Tower. Pugsley’s Drug also sold gifts. To keep the giftware merchandise separate from the pharmacy, that portion of the business was known as Mrs. Pugsley’s Emporium. In 2012, she sold the pharmacy business but kept the building and Mrs. Pugsley’s Emporium. We have many fine artisans in Amherst and a big Fiber Arts festival every October. But we did not have a quilt shop. So, in 2013, Mrs. Pugsley’s Emporium became a quilt shop. You must stop by if only to check out the interior of this historic and significant building.

https://hookingrugs.com You can learn to hook (rugs, that is) at local designer Deanne Fitzpatrick’s studio and store. Make sure to pick up one of her beautiful pieces (many have a local theme, with moose, maps, saltbox houses and the like), hooking kits, and supplies. Regular workshops and generally helpful staff, as well as cozy nooks and welcoming leather sofas provide space to hone your skills. Oh yeah, and they give out homemade oatcakes as soon as you walk through the door, so it is well worth popping inside.
