A beautiful, quiet, sacred space that is a favorite spot where I take my guests when visiting Sedona. The chapel was inspired and commissioned by local rancher and sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude, who had been inspired in 1932 by the newly constructed Empire State Building to build such a church. After an attempt to do so in Budapest, Hungary (with the help of Lloyd Wright, son of architect Frank Lloyd Wright) was aborted due to the outbreak of World War II, she decided to build the church in her native region.

Slide Rock State Park, originally the Pendley Homestead, is a 43-acre historic apple farm located in Oak Creek Canyon. Frank L. Pendley, having arrived in the canyon in 1907, formally acquired the land under the Homestead Act in 1910. Due to his pioneering innovation, he succeeded where others failed by establishing a unique irrigation system still in use by the park today. This allowed Pendley to plant his first apple orchard in 1912, beginning the pattern of agricultural development that has dominated the site since that time. Pendley also grew garden produce and kept some livestock. As one of the few homesteads left intact in the canyon today, Slide Rock State Park is a fine example of early agricultural development in Central Arizona. If you get a chance take a slide down the natural water chute.

Don't miss
The Town of Cave Creek and Carefree
A beautiful drive with wonderful places to eat, drink, shop, and enjoy the breathtaking views of the desert Southwest. A very easy 35 minute drive puts you in Cave Creek. Quirky and fun, browse and take your time. Local artisans are always happy to chat. Enjoy Breakfast at Big Earls and lunch/dinner at El Encanto Dos. We love Tonto Bar and Grille for a romantic dinner on a cool desert night. Stop in Carefree at the Carefree Sundial. Plenty of local flavor, with a variety of grabs for coffee, and choices for yummy brunch, lunch and dinner.
What to pack
Always. Bring. Water.
No matter how short the walk, hike or bike ride... bring plenty of water, wear sunscreen and a hat. Sunglasses are important too! Feel free to take a cooler provided in the casita. During the summer months pack in early and return early. The heat out here is no joke and could kill. Please use common sense. If you are unsure, contact your hosts for advice! If you run into trouble during an outside activity please call 911. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are unfortunate consequences in Arizona of ill-planned outdoor activities. Enjoy, but be safe!
What to pack
Extreme Caution Snakes!
Tourists and residents alike, please watch for snakes! With some common sense and a healthy helping of respect, you can safely enjoy the beauty that is the Desert Southwest! Stay on the trails. Never reach into hard to see spaces. It’s wise to take the hiking sticks we’ve provided for you! If you see a snake, give it plenty of space and move on. Don’t interact, or try to relocate it. That rattle in “rattlesnake” means please keep walking and don’t disturb. The majority of bites are from surprise encounters and “wanna be” snake-charmers. Stay back!
