The Menil is my first recommendation when visitors ask what they should see in Houston. You never know what amazing artist will be on display. The collection has some of the finest pieces from artists of every style. My favorite room is the often creepy, Witness to a Surrealist Vision. It is wonderfully strange.
Oh, another great thing about the Menil, it is always free.

The Orange Show is worth the drive. Situated in the back of a normal neighborhood, this quirky home was built by a postman in honor of his love of oranges. The place has a turn-of-the-century circus vibe. Most of the time the place if open to all and is free.Take some trippy photos while you are there.

During March, Houston hosts the largest rodeo in the world. Visit the livestock show to see the wide range of animals, including cows, pigs, and chickens, that were hand-raised by students. The rodeo features rough and tumble cowboys plus my favorite - the mutton bustin. You’ll laugh until you cry. Each night the rodeo features national music acts too. Get your tickets early.
