This area is part of the Appalacian trail and you can (I still think) bring dogs here on a hike - called the grand canyon of Maine - it provides for a good day hike - some water crossing to get to the trail

Book before you go
Hiking Katahdin
If you are coming to hike Katahdin you will need a DUPR - Day Use Parking Reservation available from Baxter State Park - find it on their website. There are three trail heads that access Katahdin. Katahdin Stream Epic and longer, Abol - Epic and shorter - read steeper - but all trails are steep at some point and Roaring Brook - a few different options but very popular. Book well in Advance or you may not get access - they do leave some tickets at the gate - get to the gate at 7am EVEN with a DUPR and without one plan on getting there at 5:30 so that you might be able to get one left over.
