Hawaiian-inflected fare and great drinks. Some of our favorites are the Aloha Fries and the Musubi, a sort of giant cousin to sushi. If Morgan (tall, bald, thick-rimmed glasses) is behind the bar, get a cocktail.

Tutta Bella treats its employees well and their wood-fired Neapolitan pizza is world-class. There’s a nice bar/coffee shop on one side, and a large dining room on the other. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. Great spot for kids.

Some of the best bread and baked goods in the country are about a block away. (No joke: Head baker Evan Andres has been nominated for three James Beard Awards.) It’s hard to go wrong here, but our favorites include the breads, the ham and cheese croissant, the salami sandwich, and the tortas. Also, the cakes.

Canton Noodle House

It looks like a low-lit Vietnamese pool hall across from an auto body shop, and it is. It also makes the best banh mi sandwiches in Seattle, as well as fantastic short ribs with rice. Great for takeout.

This beloved local chain has amazing ice cream in original flavors, old-school arcade games, and beer. If you’re an ice cream connoisseur, and like getting involved in local controversies, you may have to try both Full Tilt and Molly Moon’s (4822 Rainier Avenue South)--which has its own loyal following--and decide which one you like best.

Nationally-recognized fare in a super-casual atmosphere. Tight quarters, so best for parties of two.

Seattle has many amazing breweries, but this one is within walking distance. Joe recommends the “Another IPA.” No relation to the Flying Squirrel, but they’re both great spots.
