Traveler advice
Ways to save
the Portland air tram only chargers 1 way...
Great photo op from the top =)
Customs and culture
instead of change/money give homeless people granola bars
I believe that people dont ever deserve to go hungry, but please help be part of the solution with me. Homelessness is encouraging panhandling and rarely helps solve the issue long term.
Don't miss
In sept/oct the "swift" birds put on quiet the show...
The "swifts" are a type of swallow that migrate through Portland. During their nightly roost they swarm in amazing spinning formations that are spectacular. Lots of good online videos, but even better in person.
Getting around
jump on/off the Pink Trolley If doing the tourist thing
Best way to see the most in one day and be able to decide to dive into one area/activity. I send family from out of town on it to keep them busy =) https://www.graylineofportland.net/combo-tours/schedule/
What to pack
leave the umbrella at home, but get waterproof shoes!
no quicker way to be identified as a tourist. If walking around portland waterproof shoes are a must. rain+puddles=bad
Ways to save
ZOO: even on busy days the overflow parking shuttle is FREE
if public transportation through the MAX (public trains) is not your cup of tea, the zoo typically posts signage to overflow lots
Traveling with kids
On a rainy day OMSI science museum is perfect kid option
OMSI has a special place in my heart. Rotating exhibits and educational films means the whole family with enjoy the experience and learn something too.
