The Heraklion Archaeological Museum is regarded as one of Europe''s most important museums. The present building was constructed between 1933 and 1937 to plans by P. Karantinos, on the site of the imposing Venetian Franciscan friary destroyed by an earthquake in 1856.
The museum brings together archaeological finds from all over Crete, covering over 5500 years of the island''s history. Pride of place is given to the treasures of Minoan civilisation, the entire historical course of which can thus be appreciated. Justly regarded as the home of Minoan civilisation par excellence, the museum houses the most important collection of Minoan antiquities the world over.

The fortress of Koules is the unquestionable landmark of the city of Heraklion.
The promenade starting from the fortress to the lighthouse is one of the
favourite walking routes of the locals, especially in the summer. There you will see people of all ages walking or jogging, cycling, _shing, enjoying a romantic date or simply gazing at sea munching corns or pumping seeds, sold by street vendors in the main entrance. Take a picture in front of the imposing main gate of the fortress with the anaglyph lion of St. Marco, which was the symbol of Venice, and then take a stroll by the sea along with the locals. The whole route to the lighthouse is approximately 3km and it is absolutely relaxing!

Loggia, the impressive building that now hosts the Town Hall of Heraklion, used to be the Club of the Venetian Noblemen during the Venetian period. The building as you see it today is the fourth Club of the city, built around 1628 by Franscisco Morosini. The columns of the ground floor are of Doric order, while the ones on the first floor are of Ionian order. Observe the anaglyphs, where the Lion of St. Marco dominates, and do not miss the charming patio inside. If you are lucky, you might encounter one of the many bazaars or events that are organized in the open area

The Lions in Heraklion is the square of the Fontana Morosini, the ornate Venetian fountain with four lions with water gushing from their mouths. The Fontana Morosini is in Eleftheriou Venizelou Square in the centre of Heraklion, but the inhabitants of the city never use the official name, usually referring to it as the Lions Square or the Lions for short.
The fountain with the lions is one of the most important monuments the Venetians bestowed on Heraklion. When it was built, it offered a solution to the problem of supplying Heraklion with water, providing 1,000 barrels of water a day.

Crete’s must-see historical attraction is the Palace of Knossos, a mere 5km south of Iraklio, and the capital of Minoan Crete. Combining a visit here with a spin around Irakio's excellent Archaeological Museum is highly recommended.
To beat the crowds and avoid the heat, get to Knossos before 10am when tour buses start arriving, or later in the afternoon when it's cooler and the light is good for photographs. Budget a couple of hours to do the place justice.
Optional guided tours last about 1½ hours and leave from the little kiosk past the ticket booth. Most tours are in English, though other languages are available too. Prices vary according to group numbers

“Those who want to enjoy some "time out from the city will find it here, especially at night, when the moonlit skies and nighttime views of the city offer an idyllic taste of small-town simplicity. Tavernas punctuate the front of the village without crowding out houses and shops, each seeming to offer a different view. Very easy to walk around its streets and squares, Rogdia must be considered an essential stopping-place for anyone staying in the vicinity of Heraklio or the resorts of Agia Pelagia and Fodele Beach. My favourite taverna is taverna thea papadakis”
