Murtoa Stick Shed (25 min drive from The Shack) is the only remaining emergency grain store built during World War Two. This structure is an enduring testament to iconic Australian bush ingenuity and a symbol of the growth and strength of the Australian wheat industry. The Murtoa Stick Shed’s ghostly unmilled tall timber poles and central aisle draw the eye upward towards the roof as light spills into the space through skylights as if through a stained-glass window. It is magnificent.

A 35 minute drive from The Shack, Pink Lake is a small, circular, salty pink lake on the Western Highway just north of Dimboola. Beautiful to see at sunrise or sunset. Easily viewed from the rest stop by the highway, or a short walk down a path to the edge of the lake.
The pink colour of the water comes from a pigment secreted by microscopic algae. The intensity of the pink varies with the amount of water in the lake. When the lake is drier more light is reflected from the white crystallized salt reducing the impact of the pink.
