Sightseeing
Vast views of the San Fernando Valley and a small picnic area. Bring your camera. It’s the early vista point on Topanga Canyon Blvd. before you get deep into the mountains. (That drive is stunning, and in 15 more minutes if it’s not rush hour, you end up in Malibu which is a great place to hang out.)

Look up online the locations of your favorite stars before you go. When you arrive, look around in the hills for the Hollywood sign. Walk to Grauman’s Chinese Theater (where the stars’ handprints, footprints, and signatures are in concrete). We like to eat at Shake Shack in Hollywood.
There are parking lots in the area which you can find by driving around the area near the Walk of Fame. It costs maybe $6-10 typically (if we recall correctly).

Go to the Santa Monica Beach and relax on the sand for a few hours with a picnic. Carnival rides on the Santa Monica Pier are fun. The pier lights up at night. The Mexican restaurant at the end of the pier has good food and nice views. The Venice Boardwalk has souvenir vendors and Muscle Beach (muscle men/women swinging from rings and lifting weights). Don’t stay on the Venice Boardwalk/Beach after dark.

If you like art, the Getty Center is amazing. All their free tours are great. They have kid- and adult-friendly activities on their schedule. We recommend bringing sandwiches and having a picnic in the Getty Gardens. There is a hedge maze and all sorts of plant oddities. Parking costs money ($15? Not sure), but admission is free. Also, take photos of the view of LA on the tram ride.
