Mattie Beal’s name was drawn second in the Lawton Land District during the 1891 land run, giving her claim to 160 acres. She later married Charles Warren Payne, and the couple set about making a permanent home by commuting the 160 acres to individual town lots. By 1907 the couple was able to begin constructing a fourteen-room, Italian and Greek Revival–style mansion in Lawton. In this home, now listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Reveille and Retreat Protocol on Fort Sill
Reveille formally beginning the duty day at 6am and retreat ending it at 5pm. At the sound of reveille or retreat, Soldiers not in formation, will face the music and come to attention. They will salute until the final note ends. When not in uniform, Soldiers will stand at attention, and either remove their headgear w/the right hand, holding the hat over their left shoulders and hand over their hearts or for those w/out headgear, salute until the music is finished. Civilians on post should participate. Remove hat if wearing one, stand quiet and place the right hand over your heart.
