Cultural

This site is just one of several. This National Historical Park actually extends across several states - Id, Or, Mt. There are battlefields, places of cultural significance, etc. Spalding has the Visitor's Center, and a pretty outstanding museum that showcases Nez Perce cultural and traditional items. There's also historical artifacts such as a cemetery, and the remains of the Spalding MIssion. The park is a beautiful place for a picnic as well, with views of the river.

Outdoor Recreation

The Greenbelt trails run along both sides of the river despite what this map shows, and are easily accessible paved paths that are good places for an evening stroll, a jog or bike ride, or to walk your pup! They're largely pretty level (one point on the Lewiston side does have a short steep hill to access, but is still a wide, paved pathway,) and suitable for all athletic abilities. The trails have many benches and park areas, so you can sit and enjoy the views. The fat and sassy squirrels on the Clarkston side *will* try to mug you for peanuts, though, ha! The trails are the simplest way to access the river and provide a great place to enjoy it.

Buffalo Eddy is about 1/2 hr upriver from Asotin, and refers to both the beach and the cultural site. The site has informational signs, a short (gravelled, narrow - one person width) trail, and centers around the petroglyphs carved into several rocks. Bc of it's antiquity and cultural relevance to the local Nez Perce Tribe, please treat it with respect. The beach is a popular spot for swimming. It's wide and long, and the eddy makes for a nice calm swimming spot. The beach is well up into the bottom of the canyon, so there's great views of the dramatic hills and rock outcroppings. BUT! There is a strong undertow here at times and swimmers have drowned. There are posted signs on the beach confirming this. If you're a confident swimmer and respect the water, you should be fine. In fact, many families bring their (well-supervised) children for the afternoon. But because of the danger, we are not liable for any harm that occurs if you choose to swim here.
