Kristiansten Fortress is located on a hill east of the city of Trondheim in Trøndelag county, Norway, named after Christian V of Denmark-Norway. It was built after the city fire of Trondheim in 1681 to protect the city against attack from the east. Construction was finished in 1685. It fulfilled its purpose in 1718 when Swedish forces laid siege against Trondheim. The fortress was decommissioned in 1816 by king Charles XIV John. The fortress is a very short walk from the apartment and worth a visit for the view of the city.

There are more than 80 historical buildings on the site, which all display building techniques particular to the Trøndelag region. The stave church from Haltdalen is the oldest building here at the museum, and dates as far back as 1170 A.D. Sverresborg Trøndelag Folk Museum was founded in 1909 by a group of enthusiastic citizens from Trondheim who wanted to preserve old and distinct buildings from the city. The location around the ruins of King Sverre’s castle was utilized from 1914 on, and today the area spans more than 70 acres.
