HIAWATHA TRAIL AND BEARSKIN STATE TRAIL
Whether you start in Minocqua or Tomahawk, your ride begins with a long scenic lake trestle crossing. You may catch sight of a stately great blue heron standing among the lily pads, or a flight of wood ducks landing among the reeds. Covering an area the size of Rhode Island, this neck of the Northwoods has one of the densest concentrations of lakes anywhere. Both the Bearskin and Hiawatha are converted railbed trails. These grades, which once carried the famed "Hiawatha" Streamliner from Chicago, are now your ticket to scenic touring adventure. Excellent city parks at each trailhead make the trip even more fun for kids. Torpy Park in Minocqua and SARA Park in Tomahawk both have playgrounds and sandy swimming beaches.

This 1,910-acre lake is part of the Wisconsin River System. It derives its name from three rivers: “Mo” from the Somo River, “Hawk” from the Tomahawk River, and “Sin” from the Wisconsin River. The lake is a reservoir on the Wisconsin River formed by a dam that was first constructed in 1888. That dam is located just south of Tomahawk and is now a hydroelectric dam owned by the Wisconsin Public Service Corporation.
Lake Mohawksin is an ideal lake for boating and paddling; it has more than 40 miles of scenic shoreline. Paddlers will find portage areas at both ends of the lake.
Lake Mohawksin is an excellent fishing lake and holds musky as long as 50 inches. Smallmouth bass, walleyes, northern pike, channel catfish, crappies and blue gills are also plentiful. There are six public boat landings, including one in Bradley Park on the lake’s east shore.
