Willingdon Beach Trail is located in Powell River on the Sunshine Coast of BC. Once a rail bed used to haul logs to the Powell River Company Mill, the trail is wide and easy to hike or bike. The area also includes forestry and first nations artifacts so a short hike can end up quite a bit longer if you take the time to stop and check it out. The trail has many access points that will take you down to the beach and you'll find excellent swimming and places to picnic along the shore. The trail is accessible year round and is very popular.

Great Beaches

There are very few vehicles on Savary Island and the main mode of transportation is biking or walking. This means that the main way to get to Savary is to take a small water taxi from Lund which only carries people and bicycles.

Wildlife

Come fall, many of the streams that feed into Malaspina Strait teem with spawning salmon. Depending on the year and the spawning cycle, Lang Creek Hatchery and Spawning Channels, south of Powell River, will be thick with returning salmon. The best viewing is right next to the well-marked pullout on Hwy 101. As sure as salmon return to spawn in late summer, so too do raptors and bears follow. Although black bears in the Powell River region tend to frequent the backwoods logging roads, osprey and eagles, otters, and pine marten have no fear of approaching the coastline around Sliammon Creek in search of carrion. Occasionally, even a black bear will put in an appearance. One particularly good viewing spot of both predator and prey is near the Sliammon Fish Hatchery, about 3 miles (5 km) north of the Powell River bridge.

Accessible by boat only, Mitlenatch Island Nature Provincial Park offers excellent opportunities to observe and photograph wildflowers and birds. Visit in May when the island’s meadows of spring wildflowers are in bloom, or in late May to July when the harvest brodiaea blooms and in the last half of June when the coastal cactus bloom.

Winter Activities

Snowshoeing in the Knuckleheads. Powell River is home to the Knuckleheads, a winter recreation haven, perfect for skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling with two cabins available to warm yourself after a day of fun in the snow. Ascend and descend in one day, or spend the night in warmth in one of the cabins and go on day snowshoe excursions from there. The elevation of the sub-alpine area of the Knuckleheads falls within the coastal snowbelt; snowfall usually begins at November and continues until May. Largely the area is on the north slope of the range and remains sheltered from the sun. Snow can stay on the ground until as late as June. Snow depth ranges from 10 feet to 16 feet around January.
One of the Sunshine Coast’s most popular winter activities is to head outside and enjoy the lush rainforest. Even on a rainy day, the canopy overhead often provides a bit of shelter from the drizzle and the greenery is stunning. Pick a trail with a waterfall or creek and you are sure to enjoy the extra waterflow that you don’t often see during summer hikes. Popular choices include Appleton Creek, Cliff Gilker Park, Langdale Falls, Homesite Creek, Kelly Falls, and David Lam Falls. Appleton Creek / Appleton Canyon The Appleton Canyon leg of the Sunshine Coast Trail follows Appleton Creek through beautiful forests and past a variety of waterfalls. It stretches from its trailhead on Tomkinson Road to the Appleton Recreation Site. Here, on the shore of the creek and surrounded by a stand of large old-growth Douglas Fir, you can find the “swimming hole,” picnic tables, and campsites. For an additional hike, you can also continue on to the Hut at Rieveley’s Pond. This trail makes for a great day hike, and takes about an hour to hike to the recreation site (plus an additional 30-40 minutes if you choose to visit Rieveley Pond).
