History
Llanddulas
The village of Llanddulas, between Abergele and Colwyn Bay on the coast of North Wales, is dominated by the impressive 670 foot high limestone hill, Cefn-yr-Ogof. Quarrying of local limestone was formerly the main industry of the village. Limestone is still quarried in the area today. It is crushed and exported around the world, mainly for road building, from the 200 meter mechanised jetty which extends into the sea adjacent to the A55 Expressway. Llanddulas’s impressive limestone hill boasts several large caves. According to local legend, one of them was the Devil's abode. But fear not. The people of Llanddulas had an exorcism performed at the cave and drove him away! The hilltop woods to the East of Llanddulas, between the village and Gwrych Castle, are designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
Llanddulas is the birthplace of Lewis Edward Valentine (1893 – 1986) a politician, pastor and Welsh-language activist. He was the first leader of the Welsh political party, Plaid Cymru. The village pub, The Valentine, is named in his honour.
