Not a popular coffee spot, but very special indeed. :) As the name says, it is devoted to famous president of Yugoslavia Josip Broz Tito. You can admire his portraits and belongings, or listen to a story about special connection that Tito has with this city. He visited Cazin in 1942. and held a historic speech finally revealing his true identity, both to our locals and the whole Yugoslavia. For a small city like Cazin, it was pretty significant. A monument had been erected at the place where speech was given, but was later moved because of construction of the new square. After that, a new monument was built in the city park, but the locals protested wanting the old back on the original place. Since they couldn't agree on the issue with the authorities, model of the original monument was build in front of this cafe. This way people could still honor the president without authorities interference. Now, we have three monuments devoted to Tito in 500m radius. Pretty amazing huh? In Cazin, you can still hear people say "If only Tito was alive, everything would be different.", expressing their longing for some past time.

Our city mosque - very old and one of the biggest in Bosnia and Herzegovina before war in the 90s. Its size is depicted by an oral story saying that every Friday before cuma prayer, around 2.000 people would visit the mosque and do their prayer. If you didn't come at least one hour earlier, you couldn't enter the mosque garden, let alone the mosque. Just imagine 2000. individuals strolling up the small cobbled street towards mosque in this, once even smaller city! Islam was and is even today, the main religion in Cazin and 96% of the people declare themselves as muslims. This mosque is definitely a place of value and a piece of history, building a city that we know today. If you decide to visit, please make sure to dress modestly (women should cover their hair) and not disturb during prayer times.

Built in 1890., it was the place where everyone, especially women who at that time rarely went to school, got their first education, learning and reading about God and religion. Today it is used as "mekteb" or school where children learn about islam and a place for prayer.

"Old town" in translation, or a former center of all happenings in the last 100 years in Cazin, is a one-way street with many closed restaurants and cafes that tell a story of once it's vivid past. It all started with selling homemade products on the local city market (Žitarnica) on Fridays for cuma prayer. People were selling cheese, honey, jam, butter, fruits chestnut, etc. along the entire street. It was the best and most diverse market in the whole region and Cazin was very famous for it. There were even songs written about its glory. As the times changed and manufacture took over, there were less and less goods on the market. Shops and restaurants closed as the location wasn't attractive anymore. Today, the place is pretty empty and you can see only a few people selling homemade products. To honor our tradition and prevent it from fading away, local authorities started building a new market, hoping that this way the old town will shine again.

A must visit place in Cazin. Nurija Pozderac was one of the most influential politicians before and during World War II who fought for the idea of creating Yugoslavia and resisted killing innocent people, especially Jews (some of them he had been hiding in this house). His ability to fight injustice and protect people made him one of few trustworthy people of Yugoslavia's famous president - Tito. They were good friends and many say that during one of his visits to Nurija in Cazin, he had said "I am Josip Broz, a metal worker, a Croat from Zagorje " revealing his identity for the very first time which was a big deal. It still is a big deal today because of numerous disagreements and conspiracies questioning his origin. Nurija Pozderac died in 1943. fighting for Yugoslavia in The battle of Sutjeska. His gravestone rests at this unfortunate place where he lost his life. His house is declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

A house built in typical Bosnian style - there is just a few of them left in Cazin. Even though many weren't this big and built out of stone, rather from mud and straw, the principle was the same - four sides roof, two floors, not so big windows and wooden furniture on the inside. This one belonged to Ibro Alagić. Not much can be found about him, but we know that he was a rich and influential man from Cazin who people remember for bringing the very first car to the city (some say that there is a historic picture of him with the car). This house is also included on the list of national monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

If there is anything you can't miss while being in Cazin is this beautiful Old town Ostrožac looking at the river Una and it's canyon. Inside you will find many sculptures from which some are very old and others new, with unique shapes and meanings (every year a group of sculptors all over B&H and further visits the Old city and makes new ones). History says that the first mention of this castle was in 13th century. Since then, many captains and nobility families lived here, protecting the land and watching intently what was going on around the castle. If you visit the castle, you too can peak through the windows to see what they were closely watching. :) Entrance fee is 4 KM. Today, castle is used as a filming location for music videos, concerts and most of all, wedding photo shooting, very popular among locals. More on the link: https://www.ostrozac.com/

Bila Stina is the name for a white stone from which the representative of this area (carrying the same name) - the oldest mosque in Krajina region was built. What makes this mosque unique are old cannons and piled stones which served as a defensive wall, creating the appearance of a fortress. How many mosques in a fortress do you know?

Another national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It consists of tower and a stream, both named Radetina, and a cave under the tower. Radetina served as a watchtower during Ottoman empire and is positioned very high, just above the cave. The cave is an unexplored secret passage 4km long, connecting this suburb to the old part of the city. You can get inside and explore a bit by yourself (eyes wide open!). Prepare good shoes .

The heart of the city - our first and biggest roundabout thanks to whom we became very famous in Krajina and often the main subject of inside jokes with neighboring cities - "the only thing we know about and the only thing we build" (currently there are 4 of them in the city). Everyone who visits Cazin takes a picture with the roundabout (otherwise the visit doesn't count!). Make sure to stroll around, take pictures and sit on a bench to watch people passing by. Maybe you can even start a conversation with someone, people here are really friendly and chatty. :) On the square you will also see two municipal buildings where we spend much of our free time "chasing bureaucratic papers" and getting married. There used to be a school here too, our first Gymnasium, but was later turned into City library. All three buildings are built in Austro-Hungarian style and were later reconstructed.

Located on a hill with attractive and unique architecture, this medresa really catches the eye. It was built as a replacement for the Old medresa and now it serves as an islamic high school (the only one in our canton). It holds the name of Džemaluddin-ef. Čaušević, a former head of the Islamic community in Yugoslavia, theologian, reformer of Arabic letter and school system, journalist and intellectual - one of the most influential Bosniaks of 20th century.

City/town information

Even though it doesn't belong to Cazin, if you decide to go to Bihać, you can take the road passing by a village called Brekovica where you will see this beautiful mosque and take a peak from stone walls to the Una canyon. While driving, it will be hard to avoid seeing all the big, three-story houses that are very common here in Krajina. Family has always been important to us and many want to keep their dearest close by building extra stories in the house. Usually, this doesn't go by plan because more and more young people are leaving Krajina for better job and life opportunities. Houses remain empty, waiting for them to come back for vacation. It's a sad reality and no ono knows what the future will look like. But, comparing to most parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Krajina was fairly rebuilt after the war and is a rich place - these houses are the witness. People here are hardworking and independent, having learned from the past to rely on themselves. If you look closer, you will notice that almost every house has it's own garden for growing vegetables. Even though there is cheap vegetables in the market, people would rather roll up their sleeves and have their own. There is a saying, "you just grab a hoe and don't be afraid" meaning hard work will eventually pay off.

Traveler advice

Don't miss

roasted lamb - a delicacy

Every passenger coming to Krajina knows that roasted lamb is a must eat while visiting. Meat is always freshly baked from fireplace and served with white bread and some onion. Drive around Cazin (you will see many places where they bake the lamb), pick any place and it will not disappoint you.
Don't miss

Una canyon hiking trail

If you seek an escape from city noise and want to spend some time in nature, this trail is the way to fulfill your day. In these 14 km you will see our emerald beauty up close, climb the top of the canyon and have the best sunset in peace. Walk back through one of our villages to the starting point.
Don't miss

River Una - what to do?

If you visit us in summer, you have to try the famous rafting. What makes Una distinctive are it's tufa formations such as cascades, river aits, white-water passages, rapids and waterfalls. They make the river fast and perfect for an adrenaline injection. It's always cold (even in August), but a wet suit can save you from sweet overdosing. :) Other than rafting, you can try kayaking, canoeing and diving. For a more relaxed atmosphere, there are many beaches along the river flow. You can camp, light a fire and grill, drink, sunbathe and swim. But be careful, Una can be very dangerous!
Don't miss

More adrenaline - paragliding on the hill Gomila

Gomila is a place where locals like to hike and spend some time in nature. It is 800m high and medium difficulty. When you get to the top, enjoy the wide view of the city and see where you will be flying next. Have fun!
Don't miss

Festivals and events in Cazin

Since there are many of them, my suggestion would be to check the calendar on the official webpage of our Center of culture and tourism to see what is currently going on. We have events that are competitive in nature like "Grand prix -Krajiska zmija" (international mountain car race), "Enduro - Race of pain" (motocross competition) and Cazin marathon. Cultural festivals are "Chestnut fest", "New year's eve market", "Cazin fair", "Annual folklore festival" and many others.
Don't miss

Food as a souvenir - what to take with you?

Cazin is very famous for chestnut. It's trees don't grow everywhere because they need special acid soil and you can find them only at few places in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Locals collect chestnut in fall and sell it by the roadside, raw and in big sacks. You can prepare them by cooking or roasting on fire. Both is good. Next is homemade honey from either chestnut, acacia or mixed plants from meadow. Beekeeping is a long tradition and products are good quality. Cazin is also an area of plums and pears which we convert to rakija. Plum rakija is one of the finest and best known of them all.
Book before you go

Services cheaper in B&H

Cazin is unfortunately still unknown to tourists for it's attractions, but people who do make a visit usually go to mechanic to fix their car, to hairdresser and beauty salons for haircut, treatments and massages, to dentist for a better smile or to buy furniture and other expensive things since it's much cheaper to buy it here than in their home countries. If you need any of the services, you can do them here and save some money for the fun stuff. :)
