Waterfront Dining

The only thing better than having a delightful meal at a great restaurant, is enjoying that food by the water on a beautiful, sunny Southern day. Dining at a waterfront restaurant in Charleston offers picturesque views and the opportunity to enjoy fresh, local seafood. Check out https://charlestonguru.com/.../the-best-waterfront.../ for some other great options. #southernfood #chsfoodie
Built in 1942 by the U.S. Navy as a debarkation point for sailors, Fleet Landing Restaurant & Bar is a popular waterfront restaurant, not just for the wonderful harbor view, but because of the tasty food and equally great cocktails. Locals rave about the shrimp & grits and she crab soup, but my personal favorites are their Fried Green Tomato Stack and Fried Green Tomato "BLT". They also have a deliciously spicy Bloody Mary made with pepper infused vodka, which I was told is specially made by the bartenders with home-grown peppers! (Can you tell I love tomatoes!) With a fun maritime atmosphere, it is classic Southern seafood fare that celebrates the area’s waterfront heritage. Check out their menus here - https://fleetlanding.net/menus/ 🦀🦐🐟🍹

Tavern & Table on Shem Creek is a wonderful, scenic, and sometimes action packed - with all the boating activity - waterfront dining option. Classic cocktails and tasty handcrafted food in a casual, fun atmosphere - for a sweet Southern taste, try the Skillet of Cornbread - corn, cheddar, roasted poblano, topped with a whipped honey butter 😋 The menu celebrates the flavors of the Lowcountry using as many local vendors, fishermen and farmers as possible.

Located at the tip of a 13-acre island, 22 miles from IOP, Bowens Island Restaurant is famous for its locally harvested steamed oysters & seafood 🦐 🎣 since 1946. As their website states, it is certainly is a "unique Lowcountry seafood experience!" Reviews are mixed, most complaints are with with slow service, but hey, you're in the South...what's your hurry??? We really enjoyed that slow, relaxed atmosphere, and our seafood platter and drinks were delicious, especially the fried shrimp! Best part was the waterfront dining, sit and enjoy the beautiful scenery - an undisturbed view of the river, marshes, islands, and wildlife. Some other tips: time your visit as we had a limited menu at 2pm (I bet sunsets are awesome here); even though it is casual, prices are high (we shared a seafood platter for $36); crabcakes are Southern, don't expect Old Bay/MD style; and the strawberry vodka lemonade was refreshing!

Plan a visit to one of Charleston's Top Mexican restaurants: Santi's Restaurante Mexicano. We really enjoyed the friendly and welcoming staff, fun decor, and most of all the authentic Mexican cuisine. Their Shrimp Stuffed Avocado appetizer, should really be considered an entree, and the Lime Margarita here is super tasty, and strong, which explains the several 5 gallon buckets behind the bar!!! 😂

A little pricey, but absolutely delicious, rich desserts and drinks. The atmosphere is neat and nicely decorated, staff was very friendly, and overall experience was wonderful as we didn't go when it was crazy busy, which happens often. If you see a line out the door, order ahead online. Either way, Treat Yo Self - calories don't count when you're on vacation! 🤣

Traveling to the South and near the ocean, folks vacationing here mostly like to try out local Southern cuisine and seafood restaurants, looking for shrimp and grits, oysters, or bbq. But if it is Italian you are hankering, La Pizzeria, family-owned and operated (4.8⭐), has been around since 2007. One of those hole-in-the-wall restaurants that are always busy during dinner time, you'll find fresh tasting and plentiful plates here. Along with farm fresh, local ingredients, the owners take pride in using authentic (imported from Italy) ingredients. If you are in the mood for Italian comfort food, this is the place for you.

Finally made our way over to Bowens Island Restaurant, located at the tip of a 13-acre island, 22 miles from IOP. Famous for its locally harvested steamed oysters & seafood 🦐 🎣 since 1946, we figured it must be worth the drive. As their website states, it certainly is a "unique Lowcountry seafood experience!" Reviews are mixed, most complaints are about slow service, but hey, you're in the South...what's your hurry???
This 'American' restaurant, just a short walk from Shem Creek, has tasty food, refreshing drinks, daily specials, weekday happy hours, trivia nights, and live music on the patio every Friday. It's a fun, kid-friendly atmosphere, with a menu that includes way more than just chicken! Mango Shrimp Tacos anyone?

Island Life at Sullivan’s Fish Camp 🏝 Just down Palm Blvd. and across Breach Inlet, you'll find some more great eating options like this place. We were seated immediately at the bar and enjoyed the casual, comfortable atmosphere. Super friendly staff that checked in with us often, and offered us a sample of their frozen pina colada - different than the usual, and so very tasty! Highly recommend!!!

A Firefly Sweet Tea Flavored Vodka cocktail is a must-try at this Charleston distillery. Made from all-natural ingredients with local tea and Louisiana sugarcane, plenty of area restaurants will mix it with lemonade for a true southern sweet tea cocktail. You can enjoy great cocktails, happy hour specials, live tunes, and free admission here!

About an hour North on Hwy. 17, you'll find a quaint waterfront community referred to as Historic Georgetown (the 3rd oldest city in SC). Surrounded by live oak lined streets, locally owned stores and restaurants, there is a small-town charm that makes spending an afternoon here worth the drive from IOP. For a taste of local homemade Southern comfort food, stop in the SoCo Grille on Front Street and try their Buttermilk Fried Chicken dinner with some collard greens 😋; and for your sweet tooth, scoop-up some Harvest Moon Ice Cream. Besides Front Street shopping/eating and the scenic Georgetown Harborwalk, there are also a handful of museums providing a wealth of information that you can tour (some free), including the Georgetown County Museum History Center, the The South Carolina Maritime Museum, and The Rice Museum. Everything in walking distance, so park your car and take your time exploring this beautiful, little Historic Downtown. #daytripping #GeorgetownSC #history #lowcountry

Fun Neighborhoods To Check Out

Leave the hustle and bustle and sit back in a slice of paradise! The waterfront district at Shem Creek is one of our favorite places around town. There are several fantastic restaurants and bars (try Vickery's Bar & Grill or Tavern & Table) which have gorgeous waterfront views of Shem Creek, the Charleston Harbor, and surrounding marshes. To enjoy the area from a unique perspective, partake in a water adventure by booking a boat tour or renting a kayak or paddleboard. Or walk the boardwalk that spans over 3,000 feet long and keep an eye out for coastal wildlife - dolphins, birds, crabs, and more - even manatee in the Summer months!!!
