The Red Onion Restaurant & Bar was opened in the summer of 2002 by chef/owner Kevin Katz, his wife Rochelle Katz and business partner, friend and former college roommate, Jamal Mahdavian.
The Red Onion is located in an 1840s stacked-stone foundation farm house that was converted to a restaurant in the mid-1980s as The Artist's Grill. It had two more fairly short-lived incarnations as restaurants before becoming the American Bistro that The Red Onion is today.
However, many locals remember a time when it was simply a residence- at one time the Mayor of Saugerties home- and supposedly, many decades back, a place of prostitution. Lore has it that the building is haunted by the ghost of a young woman "resident" found deceased in a snow bank in the late 1800's.
Today, The Red Onion Restaurant & Bar enjoys a distinguished reputation for consistently excellent food, cocktails and a fabulous selection of wines by the bottle and glass.
