Casual atmosphere with extremely good food in a wonderful little neighborhood near UNCG. If you've never had real Southern shrimp and grits (and even if you have!), you have to try it. Right next door to Bestway -- my favorite place to bring home a six-pack of craft beer

Bike rides to get your heart racing
Bur-Mil is about a 30-minute drive, but well worth it if you want outstanding hiking and cycling. The park is home to Owl's Roost Trail, voted by Outside Magazine as the best urban mountain biking trail in the country, as well as a myriad of other trails ranging from beginner to challenging terrain and obstacles. Or ride the paved Bicentennial Greenway to one of several marinas, where you can rent kayaks and paddleboards.

This is one of my favorite road rides, and it's even better if you can get someone to meet you there and drive you back -- the total elevation loss means it's downhill much of the way! Enjoy a gorgeous ride on country roads through the Piedmont, get a great meal to eat at the store or down by the river at the Haw River Park, and enjoy an exceptionally cool little area.

A 40-minute drive will take you north to the foot of Hanging Rock State Park and the incredibly cool Moore's Spring Trails system. Take a map, as this trail system is big and very challenging. Bring lots of water and snacks for a day of exploring some of the best of the North Carolina foothills

Hiking, mountain biking, gravel, water sports - Uwharrie has it all. This beautiful gem is at the northern tip of a very old mountain range with wonderful outdoors activities and surprisingly challenging hilly terrain compared to the rest of the Piedmont. It's also the nearest network of gravel roads you will find outside of Western NC. Watch for horses on multi-use trails in good weather.
