Snow Sports
Rabbit Ears is a known destination for snowmobilers and back country explorers around the country. The location and topography make for an epic trip to enjoy fluffy powder and open meadows to play in all day.
The West side of the relatively flat 'summit' of the pass is designated for non-motorized use and there are many good ski and snow shoe trails (fox run is our favorite). The East side is primarily used by Snowmobilers and can be accessed from the house through the National Forrest north to Buffalo Park an on to Buff(alo) Pass where the going is usually good into April.

Grand lake is good Summer and Winter but it is known as the snowmobile capital of the US. The State and City spare no expense keeping trails groomed and well marked (paid for by our snowmobile registrations of course). My favorite ride is from Grand Lake to Gould and then up Bull Mountain. It is 120 miles round trip so plan on stopping at the Howling Coyote for some lunch.

Closest town to the house at 12 miles. Has all the basics (beer, bread and bacon). Well, ok, it has more than that. Top notch 4th of July festival, get a great steak, some pie, and watch fireworks from the park.

Steamboat is almost an hour away but the drive itself is worth the trip. Go over Gore Pass and visit all the small historic towns along the way, then come back over Rabbit Ears Pass. Once in steamboat you can walk the Main Street and do some shopping (stop in to F.M. Light and Sons to get your western on) or bring the skis or bike and hit the slopes. Before you leave grab a bite of mountain pie at Beau Joes Pizza. I think you will agree that Steamboat is one of the best small town atmosphere ski towns around, but don't tell anyone!
