Traveler advice
Customs and culture
Common behaviors of East Texas people:
- While driving on a country road, we will wave at anyone and everyone. Feel free to wave back.
- If you run into trouble on the road (such as driving into a ditch), you can count on some guy in a big pick-up coming along, happy to use his wench to pull you out. If you offer to pay him in return, he will likely refuse to take anything. - The checker in the grocery store will as likely as not call you “Sweetie.”
- You may be addressed as “ma’am” or “Sir,” even if you are young.
