The museum is located about 1.5 miles from camp and is open Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day. Take a left out of camp, a right at the Stop sign and it’s about a mile up the hill on the left. Even if you’re not into museums you should check it out – most of it is outdoors. They have the best spot to take a picture of Blue Mountain Lake, so if nothing else you should do that.

A little further up from the museum, on the right is the entrance to the hiking trail for Blue. If you get inspired and have decent hiking boots, it’s a nice hike. It takes about 1.5 hours, one-way and if it’s a nice day you get spectacular views.

Another great hike is Castle Rock. Take a left out of our driveway, a right at the stop sign, and left at Maple Lodge Road (before the museum) and you’ll see signs. Breathtaking views!! Takes an hour or so to hike one-way.

Cascade Pond is a great place to travel to via Kayak from Durant Lake. We have had many a picnic there and have hiked around the area in search of wildlife. Don't worry, you'll be lucky if you actually spot a bear.

This is a fairly remote pond so chances are good you won't see other people, just wildlife. The pond is located off the access road to O'Neill Flow. To get there take a right out of camp, drive about 3+ miles, and the pull-off is on the left. There is a gate that should be open to the public. Drive in and not too far in you’ll come to a bridge and the creek on either side is pretty good for fishing brook trout. Continue on for the pond. From the end of the access road the trail will be on the right; just follow the arrow and trail markers. The trail is mostly flat but there is a slight descent. The trail is very new to the state's trail system so the tread is very soft and fresh. The trail ends at a wonderful primitive tent site with a small fire ring. A faint herd path will get you to the shore of the pond, where you can enjoy a bit of shore fishing.

This is a great place to visit for a short hike and to cool off in the water. Just 10 miles (15 minutes) away. Take a left out of camp, then a right at the stop sign towards Long Lake. As you come down the hill before Long Lake you’ll see a sign for Buttermilk Falls, take a left on North Point Road, go 2 miles and the falls are on the right.

Fishing

Off the beaten path! Take a left out of camp, then a left at the stop sign. It’s less than two miles around a sharp bend; there’s a guard rail on the left and a small stone wall on the right with the creek underneath. Park near the guard rail and enter on that side of the creek. You might have to walk in a bit to get to the little fishing holes or visit Wilson Pond Trail.

There are no grocery stores in Blue Mountain but the Corner Store located just .5 miles from the cabin is a great place to pick up essentials. They also serve breakfast, lunch, made-to-order pizza, cookies, and ice cream. Jeff the owner is super friendly and knowledgeable. We love supporting small businesses! Daiker's has always been a favorite of ours for dinner. It's in Old Forge, so we typically stop there on the way to the cabin. They have indoor and outdoor seating overlooking 4th Lake, and a great Friday night fish fry. Plus they offer activities such as a pool table, a game room, and a fabulous fireplace in a traditional Adirondack setting.
