Beautiful up top, and you can swim in Donnell Pond at the base. At this part of Donnell, there are some spots that get very deep very quickly.

If this is what I think it is, it is about a 10 minute walk to a nice, little pond for swimming. It is a good place for little kids as the slop of the pond is gentle.

When our kids were little, this was a favorite place to walk. Take a picture of the map, as there are lots of little trails, and it can be confusing. However, this also makes it great. If things are going well, take another little loop. If things are falling apart, you can bail pretty quickly.

Check out the Schoodic portion of Acadia. Just past the point is Little Moose Island. It is fun to walk around this little island before or at low tide. If you are within a couple hours of high tide, you will get wet. You can bike around the Schoodic loop or on the carriage trails. FYI, some of the trails are pretty steep.

Parking on MDI and throughout Acadia is an issue. Consider taking the bus.

We recently hiked Pemetic Mountain. We parked near the Bubbles, did the rock scrambled to the top and were treated to a beautiful walk along the top and a less steep walk down to Jordan Pond. It was a wonderful hike and not very crowded. The parking lot, however, was packed in early June.

Neighborhoods
Hancock is a quiet little town on Frenchman's Bay. There are 2 gas stations with a small convenience stores and Dollar General across the bridge. If you are planning on cooking a lot, you should buy groceries on your way through Ellsworth.

Traveler advice
What to pack
Wear layers and some thoughts on bugs
In Maine, the weather can vary greatly throughout the day and also from coastal to inland. It is wise to wear layers and have warm clothes in the car.
Head to the ocean if it is bug season. Also, the mosquitos tend to be worse early in the morning and in the evening. It is always a good idea to check for ticks after being outside. We do have Lyme infected ticks in Maine.
Getting around
Check the Tide Clock or an Online Tide Chart
Little Moose Island is a fun walk, but you need to be back to shore several hours before high tide. Tidal Falls is most impressive 2 hours before low tide. You might enjoy a warm(ish) swim in the ocean if you find the right spot on an afternoon high tide ~ Taft Point can be lovely! Enjoy following the tides.
