Traveler advice
Getting around
Amazing Public Transportation network
Finnish Public Transportation is clean, safe and almost always on time. You can use www.hsl.fi/en or the HSL- app to find your way and buy your tickets.
When boarding a tram, a metro or the train, you only have to show your ticket if asked.
When boarding a bus, get in at the front door, show your ticket to the driver and then proceed to be seated.
Also remember, visiting TALLINN, ESTONIA is cheap and quick, the ferry costs around 30€ and takes about 2,5 hours to Estonia. Best Ferries to use are www.vikingline.fi, www.tallinkisilja.fi, www.eckeroline.fi
Don't miss
Tallinn, Estonia and Suomenlinna + Winter Time
You can catch a ferry to Tallinn, Estonia.
Also don't forget the Helsinki Archipelago and Suomenlinna in the summer time, you have a lot of options in ferries.
In the winter time, ask your host for tips on where to find the best local winter activities, and reindeers!
If you want to experience the true Nordic Winter, Helsinki is too south so you'll have to take a train or a plane to the Northern Part of Finland. Lapland will provide you with an amazing Winter Wonderland!
Customs and culture
Shoes off when entering someones home
When entering someones home it is considered extremely rude if you don't remove your outerwear and shoes unless told otherwise :) You can always place them inside, in the foyer.
We do not usually give tips in restaurants, but it is not forbidden!
Almost everybody can understand and speak English.
We like to stick to rules and we are mostly very law obiding, and the Police are extremely nice and can be trusted at any time.
Health Care and Ambulance rides are free or can cost you a few euros, so don't be afraid to call for help at 112 !
Ways to save
Public Transport
I can't recommend Public Transport enough, it's cheap, clean, safe and reliable.
Taxi rides are VERY expensive.
What to pack
Make sure to pack warm layers
If you visit in the Summer time, you have to realize you are still very close to the Arctic Circle, so Summer in Finland can go from warm to freezing in the matter of hours. Always carry something warm with you :)
And in Winter time, make sure you have warm and water resistant boots on at all times outdoors. Winters can get FREEEEZING and snow can accumulate at a very rapid rate, so be sure to wear warm layers, and most definetely hat and gloves !
