Explore the WWII gun battery emplacement designed to protect the Puget Sound Region from a potential Japanese invasion during WWII. This fort is part of 2 other forts guarding the entrance to the greater Seattle area which was coined "The ring of fire". On the opposite side of the Straight of San Juan de Fuca, is Fort Worden near Port Townsend where 'Officer and a Gentleman' was filmed.

Oak Harbor is home to the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station featuring F-18 Hornets. Although entry is prohibited, you can observe the flight operations from various locations. An air museum located in downtown Oak Harbor features a WWII PBY (Patrol Plane) used throughout the war with history of the role the area played during the war. There are also various locally owned shops featuring arts and crafts, clothing, books, etc. along the main street.
