Sightseeing
We go here many times each summer! Don't miss the little museum explaining about the fish railroad cars, and then walk through the replica where a volunteer shows you around. Tip: buy the large bag of fish food - watching the fish swim up in a huge mass and fight to get it can provide hours of entertainment. The excellent city park is next to the hatchery.

It's a little lake down a gravel road - you can hike all around it. It has kayaks, paddleboats, and paddle boards available for rent.
There are only outhouses for facilities; no showers either.
There is a store, which also has a little cafe in it so you can get sandwiches and burgers.
It's a much shorter drive than to Lake Pactola, so if the weather turns bad or everyone is bored, it's not as much of a commitment.

Traveler advice
Getting around
Have an all-wheel drive vehicle in winter.
An all-wheel drive is needed especially in our neighborhood. More than one friend hasn't been able to make up the hill.
Getting around
Spearfish doesn't have Uber.
Call Canyon Cab if you need a lift: (605) 717-9997.
What to pack
Pack for changing weather.
It can be hot during the day, yet quite cool at night.
In the spring and fall, it can be shorts weather.... then dump 18 inches of snow two days later.
Spearfish holds the world record for the fastest recorded temperature change. On January 22, 1943, at about 7:30 a.m. MST, the temperature in Spearfish was −4 °F (−20 °C). The Chinook wind picked up speed rapidly, and two minutes later (7:32 a.m.) the temperature was +45 °F (7 °C).
