>> a spot with a nice beach and also a trailhead for a difficult mountain
This trailhead is located on Route 3 going towards Saranac Lake, located on the left side. If you take the trail that is located on the same side of the road as the parking area, you'll walk less than a mile of flat trail and end up at a long stretch of sandy beach located on Middle Saranac Lake, perfect for swimming or lounging.
If you take the trail on the opposite side of the road from the parking area, that is the trail to the peak at Ampersand Mountain.
The first half of this trail has a moderate slope, but then it increases rapidly afterwards. Not recommended for first time hikers, but can be safely enjoyed if you have moderate prior experience. Also depending on the day, it can be quite muddy.
Distance : 2.7 miles one way | 5.4 miles round trip
Elevation gain from trailhead to peak : 1,775 feet (steep)
Mountain elevation : 3,353 feet above sea level
Rough estimate round trip time : 5 hours
