Long-standing proper bistro serving modern british and trad french bistro dishes. Expect to pay £30 to £50 a head. Good attentive service and regular 'rolling menu' . We sometimes like to go after the theatre for a pudding and a coffee. Best Creme Brulee in town. ££

Popular Italian that we use for late night dining when we have just arrived. They serve till way past a sensible bed-time. The food isn't incredible but its cheap and cheerful and brilliant for kids, pizzas are really good. Speedy service and only 6 mins walk from the apartment. £

Groans from the kids on announcing this but they talked about it for days after. You could spend a whole week here and still not see everything. Not to be missed and its free (there may be special internal exhibitions that you need to pay for - and usually book) £0

Get your trainers on and walk up Arthurs Seat from Holyrood. Stunning views and on a clear day you can see the Cairngorms. It takes about 45 mins from the bottom at medium pace. Holyrood is at the bottom of the Royal Mile and easy to walk to in 30-40 mins.

The Edinburgh Zooilogical Society is one of the oldest in the world but this is a really modern zoo where science and animal welfare trump 'freak-show'. 1000 animals and loads of special events etc. Penguin feeding a must for small kids. Get there either on the Balgreen tram then 600m walk or get a bus from Haymarket £
