Amazing home made ice cream with paired cookie dough, and great drip coffee. On 47th St right across the street from the apartment pretty much, and down a bit.

Great coffee and home made biscotti right downstairs, on 10th Ave btwn 46&47. The woman who owns the place is pretty grumpy; but it's an authentic NY bruskness.

Amy's Bread has great coffee, sandwiches and cupcakes and that kind of thing. Amy was one of the first pioneers in the rejuvenation of Hell's Kitchen.

This tiny little place doesn't look much, but all my friends from San Diego swear that the little hole in the wall tacqueria in the rear makes the best tacos this side of Tijuana.

This place does food from the region where France and Italy meet - Nizza is Italian for Nice. Great food, and I love their campari based cocktails.

Another place whose name doesn't lie: They have a menu made up almost entirely of empanadas. And they're all delicious! They have desert ones too - and great sangria.

There are tons of Mexican restaurants on 9th Ave serving reliable food and margaritas. El Centro is the most fun, and has the best food - not to mention my favourite - a frozen tamarind margarita.

Shopping

This is the West Village institution - it moved up here after outgrowing it's original location. It's now a wholesale bakery with an outlet store, full of goodies to grab on the way to the Park.

Liquor stores are all over, but this one has local character. Sometimes they'll need to move a pic of Mother Theresa to get to the gin, other times you'll see a collection jar for an "unwed mother".

Drinks & Nightlife

This is a wine bar on 9th Ave btwn 46&47, pretty much on 46. They have a brick oven out the back so I go there for the most amazing flat breads and nibbles.

This place is a little swanky with their prices and patchy with their service, but the rooftop bar has a million dollar view and is the perfect spot to toast your arrival and get your bearings.
