Drinks & Nightlife

While there is a horseshoe shaped bar and TV screens, it is a comfortable, family type place. There are other dining rooms than the bar with tables and large booths. The food is a comfy mix of local and homey type food. Friendly and upbeat decor.

Great, relaxed atmosphere, wide selection of beers on tap. And, great food. It's not over the top expensive and is always busy.

You want to go around low tide because you can't get there if it is high tide. The sandy bar between the mainland and the island it so magnificent. There is a trail that will take about 30 min. to 45 min. for you to get from the parking area to the bar so allow for that. It is worth the hike in and out.

This is a college town too. While Castine is ripe with colonial history from the Federal period with gorgeous homes and a waterfront there are plenty of things to see around town. If Maine Maritime's training ship is in dock you can see that and if you plan in advance might be able to go aboard for a tour.

Sightseeing

Maine's biggest lobster port can be found here, in the town of Stonington. Here you can take a ferry to beautiful Isle Au Haut, for either a boat ride to/from the island, or get off the boat and walk about a bit. Stonington also has restaurants, one specifically Fisherman's Friend, which is located immediately on the port, providing a most wonderful view of the ocean and the islands.
