Cherry Valley National Wildlife Refuge
The property continues a natural "super highway" linking the ridge along the Blue Mountain to Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and other protected lands, said Kyle Shenk, Pennsylvania state director for The Conservation Fund, which is based in Arlington, Virginia.
This is a mountain region used by up to 20,000 migrating raptors and more than 140 bird species every fall, with wetlands vital to species like the federally threatened bog turtle.
"It's a buffer for the wilderness experience, for trails that shoot off into other state lands and nonprofit lands that allow for hiking and hunting and fishing," Shenk said, pointing to benefits beyond those newly afforded to wildlife relying on the land.
The refuge is open dawn to dusk for hiking and activities like wildlife photography
