Jo's Takeaways is right behind the playground. Great place to get an ice cream or ice block on a hot day wandering around, or grab fish and chips and park up by the water and watch the local kids do bombs ("manus") off the Kopua walk bridge. (I'd only do this on a high tide if you are tempted- otherwise it's not that safe). There is popular and safe family swimming here, a great playground and skate park. The walk bridge is a beautiful wander across into town and lights up at night.

There are two tracks up to the summit of Mt Karioi. Mt Karioi Track starts at Te Toto Gorge and is about 3 and a half hours to the summit. This is more challenging, including chain ladders in places. The other track called Wairake Track is 2 to 3 hours. The track starts at the end of Karioi Road, off Ruapuke Road. Always take enough drinking water with you and let someone know where you are going before heading out. You could do this via this link: http://www.adventuresmart.org.nz/outdoors-intentions/

The continuation of the walk down from Upper Wainui Rd (Water-race Track) to Ngarunui Beach. This part starts from Wainui Rd, just across the road from where the Water Race Track comes out.

The start of the walk from Upper Wainui Rd down to Ngarunui Beach. Follow the mown access path down to a small bridge over a stream. Continue on until you reach a linked track that follows an historic water-race. Turn right (it's all signposted) towards the beach. You pop out onto Wainui Rd. Cross carefully and continue on down the Ngarunui Beach Track. A third of the way down there is a lookout providing excellent views northward along the coast. The surf patrol operates about 200m from the track entrance to the beach.
