Super local classic old market. Sells tobacco and basic groceries. The real secret is to go for the hotdogs or milkshakes. At the very least, you should walk in to see some historic Johnson City local charm.

The balds at Roan Mountain are worth the 40ish minute drive from Johnson City. You can drive almost to the top, followed by a brief hike, and incredible views. If you do make the trip, you should try to stop by Thai Am (a hole in the wall Thai restaurant on the drive to Roan Mountain...cash only and odd hours so we recommend calling ahead).

This is our favorite local hike and view. About a 30 minute drive from JC....you can drive right up to the top and take in 360 degrees of Blue Ridge Mountains....or you can park and hike up (about an hour hike) on the Appalachian Trail. Great picnic spot at the top!
