The waters of Styx were associated with theological and philosophical ideas, like those of the Eleusinian Mysteries, the Orpheus and beliefs about reincarnation. A renaissance-type, exterior marble staircase of 150 stairs, built in 1870 on the design of Angelos Korizis, unites the Holy Pilgrimage with the coastal public road. According to tradition, around 1550, a captain who had been flooded in the open air of Aigio as he struggled with the waves saw a glow coming from afar and pointing the way to the land. At the point where he saw the glow he later found the icon of the Virgin Mary, wedged on the rocks. Then he decided to practice in a small cave inside the rock that still exists today. Over ti
