City/town information
Canada might be a young country but Halifax, as one of its oldest city, has a few major event to mention.
- 1820 Alexander Keith Brewery: the oldest brewery still in production has its own museum. Well worth the tour. One of our guest went twice to show her new boyfriend.
- April 15, 1912: Home of a few cemeteries holding remains from the people who perished on the Titanic. It has its own special section in the Maritime museum and a monument in a cemetery.
- December 6, 1917 : Halifax Explosion from the Mont Blanc, a French vessel loaded with 2.9 kilotons of explosives which collided with the Belgian relief ship. There is a monument in the north end park with bells that only rings each year at the time of the explosion.
The major employer of Halifax population is the National Defense with a naval base, its airport base and land army.
Dartmouth, across the harbor from Halifax, is called the city of lakes as it has 23 lakes within its boundaries.
It actually has the National Defense Airport and the Canadian Armed Force.
The National and World Canoe and Kayak competitions come in its Banook Lake every so many years. We have a few Olympians as well in these sports.
The only thing I know about Mineville is that it used to have a gold mine a very long time ago. It started to re-populate not so long ago.
