The Other Side of Temple Square, Polygamy and Utah's Past
Did you know the founder of Salt Lake City and the Utah Territory had 55 wives? Polygamy, the practice of having multiple wives, was a foundational aspect of the State of Utah and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Hear the story of Salt Lake City and Utah that many would prefer you didn’t hear. Walk the streets of the downtown area with a local expert and investigative journalist, and learn of the dark history surrounding the church, polygamy, and early Utah pioneers. This is information you won’t learn about from local missionaries at Temple Square! We will explore the Temple Square grounds and surrounding area, then walk three blocks up to the Utah State Capitol. We will explore the rotunda, learning state and church history throughout, then walk down to finish the tour where we started.

Farm to Tub Goat Milk Soap
A homemade goat milk soap bar is a wonderful, handcrafted artisan experience! Meet and connect with our small milk goat herd of Nubian and Oberhasli goats. Our dairy goats are so sweet and fun. They love scratches on their heads and shoulders. We will start our class with a tour of our 8 acre urban farmstead where you will meet the goats, pigs and horses that call our farm home. We will explain a bit about care, feed and milking goats. Goat milk fact: goat milk is the only milk naturally homogenized and digestible by all mammals, hence the term nanny goat. We will be making a cold process soap with goat milk, coconut oil, olive oil, lard and lye. Safety first! Lye can be dangerous. We provide chemical resistant goggles and long cuff gloves. Please wear long sleeves and pants and closed shoes. We will weigh ingredients, melt fats and oils, prepare milk and lye mixture and learn about tracing and saponification. The soap mixture will be put into molds to set (soap is hard and ready to be unmolded in 24 hours and ready to use in 4 - 6 weeks). You will be leaving with aged bar of goat milk soap ready to be used on your skin and hair. We love our goats and our farm made goat milk soap and we look forward to sharing with you. Other things to note We will be handling lye.
Urban Animal Farmstead Experience
You will arrive at our farm and get a tour and introduction to all our animal friends and urban farmstead. We have milk goats, chickens, horses and Kune Kune pigs and our hay bale garden. Also a worm farm and composting from animal, farm and food waste. We help our community by getting spent brewers grain from local breweries that we compost and feed to our animals. Our horses live out on a natural care pasture as a social natural herd. Then you are able to spend time in any of the areas or with any of the animals you feel drawn to. We love to talk about and answer questions about sustainable rotational farming, composting, animal husbandry, and natural care boarding. Other things to note Please wear closed toed shoes.
Fluff and Feathers, Alpacas and Hens
Fun for all ages! We’ll start out talking about alpacas, including how to approach and interact with them. Then we will move to the yard and introduce our four alpacas! We’ll explain what makes alpacas unique, and what they like and dislike. We will also share and clear up myths and misconceptions about them. Guests will have the opportunity to pet and feed the alpacas, take one for a walk around the yard, and take lots of pictures. Come with all of your alpaca questions! Next we will move on to the chicken habitat and everyone will have the opportunity to observe, pet, and feed them. Please feel free to take lots of pictures! We will go in the coop to look for eggs, and finish up the outdoor tour with the smaller chicken coop, where you can meet a member of the smallest chicken breed in the world! Questions and pictures are encouraged! You’ll be surprised how much variety there is in size, color, and personality. (I have a dozen breeds including rare breeds from a Black Copper Marans to a Frizzled Serama.) Before leaving, you can to wash up, and take a look at chicken eggs of different sizes, colors and shapes. Other things to note Alpacas are sensitive creatures. Date Night Hand Making Rings
This is a hands-on class where guests will be taking metal and shaping it into jewelry. I’ll provide enough silver and/or copper for each guest to make a ring or a set of earrings. We’ll spend a short time going over safety and then you’ll have to decide what you want to make. I’ll provide examples of already made jewelry to use as templates if guests need ideas. By the end of the session each guest will have a piece of handmade jewelry to take home with them. Some date night couples like to make rings for each other instead of making jewelry for themselves. Other things to note Bring your eyeglasses. Come prepared to get your hands dirty and dress appropriately.
