It's easy to get on the Blueridge Parkway that winds around the GSMNP. Lots of scenic pull-offs along the way that tell you what you're looking at and the elevation where you are. Beautiful views throughout the driving experience. Bring a picnic type meal or snack - there are lots of places to rest and enjoy a refreshment. Have a jacket or sweater handy because the altitude will change the climate for the cooler.

Sightseeing
Staying in Waynesville, you are so close to visiting another nation! Don't miss going to Cherokee, NC. Lots of shops, history, museums, rafting or swimming the Oconeluftee River (in warm weather), the famous casino and Santa's Land & Zoo. We recommend getting tickets to see "Unto These Hills" - a play done seasonally in the outdoor ampitheater.

Asheville is a unique and popular city to visit for many reasons. Discover it's history by taking the trolley tour first and getting to know the neighborhoods. Then see the Biltmore Estate, America's largest private home and grounds. Of course there's great shopping in the Biltmore Village area as well as fine dining. The funkier part of town is the River Arts District or "RAD" for short! The home of Thomas Wolfe is also available to tour in Asheville. Just about 30 miles or 45 minutes from our apartment building.

Anywhere on the parkway is beautiful! If you are visiting in the summertime, be sure to bring a light sweater or jacket. Temperatures can be 10-15 degrees cooler than in town. Our favorite thing to do is to take a picnic supper, buy a Mountaineer newspaper and park at one of the overlooks to tailgate!
And yes, it's even pretty in the rain.
