The castle of Sassari was built by the Aragonese in XIV century A.D., after the city's revolts against the new rulers between. It became the seat of the Inquisition since 1564. The fortress was completely demolished by the people of sassari between 1877 and 1880. The only surviving part of the castle, the "barbacane" lays under Piazza Castello.
