Accessible on foot from the property, about an hour’s walk along the river Stour this beautiful National Trust location was made famous by the painting ‘The Haywain’ by John Constable.
Great local National Trust site. We always park in Dedham and walk along the river with the dogs to the Mill. Cafe on site also.
Flatford lies in the heart of the beautiful Dedham Vale. This charming hamlet was the inspiration for some of John Constable's most famous pictures, for example, the Hay Wain or Boatbuilding near Flatford Mill among many others. Wandering beside the River Stour or looking at Flatford Mill and Willy Lott's House you can feel as if you are actually walking through one of his paintings. This is great walking country, with our Orange and Purple Trails providing easy access to beautiful landscapes. Dogs are welcome, but they must be kept on the lead at all times as we have livestock grazing. Please follow the goverments social distancing guidelines at all times. Please note that Suffolk County Council has closed Fen Bridge between Flatford and Dedham for safety reasons. However, you can still walk between the two villages using the paths beside the river Stour.
