Fan of culture? Then you can indulge yourself and visit the Bourla Theatre or the City Theatre. The Bourla Theatre was designed in 1827 by architect Pierre Bourla. With the special semicircular entrance, he left his mark on the unusual architecture. The Bourla Schouwburg has been the home of the Toneelhuis theatre company since 1998. The City Theatre has a tragic beginning: on 8 October 1944, a V1-bomb fell on the Bonte Mantelstraat in Antwerp, destroying it and some other streets almost completely. As a result, the city council decided in '69 to make way for Theaterplein, where the city council would build Antwerp's new municipal theatre. For in the Bourlaschouwburg a fire had broken out in the cellars, and three years earlier there had been a fire in a cinema in Sclessin. The cultural temples had to become safer and larger. The plans for the City Theatre were born.
