The Wainstones are a rocky cliff at the western end of Hasty Bank. From the top of the hill, there are stunning views of the North York Moors to the south and the sharply contrasting Tees plain and industrial Teesside to the north. (Described by Country Walking magazine as one of the best views in the UK). The Hill is traversed by the C2C walk, the Cleveland Way, the Lyke Wake and White Rose challenge walks. On approaching the jumble of rocks there appears to be no obvious way up the cliff as the footpath loses any semblance of identity in the boulders. BUT keep to the right, close to the cliff, with the rock 'finger' above you, and work your way through and up the boulders. You will see glimpses of the route walkers have taken before you and the passage is worn smoother than the surrounding rocks from boots and hands (and even bottoms !). Without much difficulty you enter a narrow cleft. Follow it to the end and you find a rather high grass bank with a few footholds taking you to the top of the plateau where you are well rewarded for your effort, with magnificent views. Stop and take in the scenery. If I am meeting you at Clay Bank, it is just an easy mile along the top with a steep rocky staircase descent to the road. Ring me from here and I will set off to meet you.
