Tips from locals
The Otakou is on the way to the albatross colony and the penguins. It is the most beautiful Marae and with stunning views. It is a wonderful place to see. See all three places on this one trip
25 kilometres from Dunedin City, at the eastern end of Otago Peninsula is the settlement of Otakou, home to the Otakou marae. Prior to the arrival of European settlers, Otakou was a significant Māori settlement, home to three Māori iwi; Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Māmoe and Waitaha. It was close to this marae that the HMS Herald anchored in 1840.
