Tips from locals
The lighthouse stands at the tip of the peninsula overlooking the rock responsible for the wreck of the Birkenhead. The white octagonal tower with its red lantern dome has its original twelve glass dioptric panels preserved in the Hermanus Museum. It was initially painted with vertical red and white stripes.
Very interesting local history or take a walk to the top of the lighthouse to enjoy the views
The name Danger Point says it all. As early as 1488 this beautiful but treacherous peninsula on the southern point of Walker Bay was dubbed ‘Ponte de São Brandão’ by Bartolomeu Dias. This was a direct reference to the many reefs under the surface of the ocean, making it one of the most dangerous sea routes in the world. No fewer than seven wrecks lay scattered around the jagged rock pinnacles that lurk in the waters beneath the lighthouse, most notably, the HMS Birkenhead. In 1895, after more than 20 ships had been wrecked, the Danger Point Lighthouse was built to alert sea traffic to the presence of Danger Point Reef. Danger Point Lighthouse is a Transnet National Ports Authority manned lighthouse and there could be unforeseen happenings that keep the lighthouse keeper from opening. It is advisable to call ahead to avoid disappointment.
