Himejima shrine. What is shrine? Past the “torii” is the spiritual area where the gods inhabit. One of the unique aspects of Shinto is that the gods are truly invisible and there is no representation of them in the shrine. For that reason, the “honden” is more functional than decorative. There are no complicated structures, artistic statues or gardens to walk through at shrines, but this intentional so that worshippers may experience the energy of the gods during their visit.
