The abbey of Piona, or more precisely, the Priory of Piona, a typical building of Comacina art in exposed squared stone, which can also be reached from the lake by boat, is a rare jewel of Lombard Romanesque architecture. Located on the Olgiasca peninsula, in front of Gravedona on the extreme tip of the Lecco branch, it offers a splendid panoramic view of the western coast of the Lario, as well as the opportunity to savor the tranquility and peace enjoyed by the Cistercian monks who still live there today. . The trip is worth it for the location alone with views across the lake to the mountains beyond. But factor in the historic abbey with its medieval cloisters and sense of spirituality this raises the bar to a whole new level. The site is not very large, but is worthy of exploration and if you chose you can buy honey or limoncello made at the Abbey itself.

Among the sacred buildings stands out the famous Piona Abbey (Abbazia di Piona), commissioned by Vescovo (Bishop) Agrippino, dating back to the 7th century. Entering into the abbey you can visit, the Church, the Cloister and the Chapter House. Inside of the building that houses the products of the Piona monks, we can find medicinal herbs, honey and the famous liquors wisely distilled according to the most ancient traditions, all natural products made by the hard-working monks.
