We had a great time riding the sleds up and down the hills. Be sure to bring sunglasses. The glare can be difficult to deal with shining off the white sand. The video presentation at the entrance is worth watching. It helps you understand the creation of such a spectacle.
So many hiking and biking options in The Lincoln National Forest North Cedar Creek Trail- 3.6 mi (wildlife, moderate) Peak Ridge Trail 5.4 mi (views, wildlife, horses, moderate)
Time to cool down a few degrees? Head into the mountains. Hwy 82 east takes you to Cloudcroft and the Lincoln National Forest. A quaint town, with shops, places to eat and quite a few visitors in the summer. The Lodge is set in the Sacramento Mountains, a Victorian-style hotel worth viewing or enjoy fine dining at Rebecca's at the Lodge.
Surrounding Cloudcroft is the Lincoln National Forest (over 1.1 million acres in all), which offers an abundance of well-maintained hiking trails for all skill levels, mountain biking trails, campgrounds (some even year-round), and snow sledding, tubing, and cross-country skiing trails. Explore in all seasons! We particularly like the Trestle Trail (0.9 miles away), Osha Trail (1.0), & Bluff Springs (13.7). Fun fact: the Lincoln National Forest is where the real "Smokey Bear" cub was rescued from a 1950 fire. His legacy endures today as the symbol of fire safety for the U.S. Forest Service.
