Hip Vesterbro's busy main street Vesterbrogade offers offbeat shops, art galleries and bars. Within the wider area, Kødbyen, the meatpacking district, is home to art spaces including Galleri Bo Bjerggaard and V1 Gallery, plus restaurants offering a mix of international and New Nordic cuisine. At the Carlsberg Brewery, visitors take tours, sample Denmark’s signature beer and marvel at the life-size elephant statues.

Vesterbro is a charming place for students, artists and younger families, because the housing is cheaper there. Vesterbro is a good place to go shopping. There are the two shopping streets Istedgade and Sønder Boulevard. The latter starts at Halmtorvet where people hang out in the many cafés. Vesterbro is also where you find strange shops and used items. Besides 2nd hand shops you find a flea market near Øksnehallen on Onkel Danny's Square most Sundays in the summer season. Moreover, on Sønder Boulevard are occasional and very popular flea markets along the road. Long ago Vesterbro has some problems with drugs and prostitution. After many successful renovations, families, hotels and restaurants have moved in and changed the neighbourhood entirely. There is a tiny part of the upper main road, Istedgade (facing to the Central Station), where you can still find a couple of porn shops. Vesterbro also has many good and less expensive places to eat. It is perfect for a budget meal or to go for brunch as it is just on the other side of the harbour. Restaurants: Retro Gusto. Italian. Address: Vesterbrogade 40, 1620 København V. Tel. +45 5373 7373 Kebabistan. Kebab (Turkish/Arabic) in Pita bread or Durum. A tiny place on Istedgade 105, 1650 København V, where you have to stand up, but it is the best quality kebab. Their meat is a mix of beef and lamb, which is seldom to get. They also have a place in Nørrebro (larger with tables) and a small place in Amager also. If you are into Kebab, you should also try out Kösk Kebab in outer Nørrebro where you find plenty room to sit down (Close to Nørrebro Station, Frederikssundsvej 23, 2400 København)
