Historic Arbroath Abbey brood over Arbroath. A fascinating place linked to the declaration of Arbroath - some say a model for the US declaration of independence some 450 years later.
Substantial ruins of a Tironensian monastery, founded by William the Lion in 1178, who is buried here. Arbroath Abbey is famously associated with the Declaration of Arbroath of 1320, which asserted Scotland's independence from England. Parts of the abbey church and domestic buildings remain, notably the gatehouse range and the abbot's house.
Read the Declaration of Arbroath in the abbey in which Scotland’s nobility proclaimed their independence from England around 1320. Or listen to your voice in the sacristy, which has one of the longest echoes in the country. The abbey was founded in 1178 by King William the Lion, who was buried here.
