It's the seat of « diocese de Saint Sebastien » and of the Maritime Province of Saint Sebastien. Bathed by the waters of the Cantabrian Sea, at the mouth of the River Urumea, it owes much of its fame to its bay, the Bay of La Concha, framed between two rocky eminences, the Igeldo and Urgull mountains, real natural balconies from which a large part of the city, the ocean and the surrounding hilly countryside can be seen. The city counts on the presence of numerous monuments (cathédrale du Bon Pasteur, basilique Sainte-Marie du Chœur, palais de Miramar, pont María Cristina, arènes d'Atocha, place de la Constitution et rues pittoresques du centre historique), museums (Science Museum, whale hunting, Chillida-Leku museum) and an aquarium. The Kursaal Palace, built in 1998, is characteristic of contemporary architecture.
